Come and join Duncan to explore the edible seashore on a fun foraging foray, where we will find out about the inter-tidal zone where many animals live as well as discovering the wonderful edible seaweeds that can be found there! Over 2 hours you will be introduced to seashore ecology, what seaweeds are then go out with marine biologist Duncan to find what we talked about finishing off with a demonstration of simple ways of cooking different seaweeds. Hot beverages on cold days will be provided. You can even take away what you have foraged!
Where?
We explore the seaweed heaven that is Easdale island, a phycologist’s (person who studies seaweed or algae in general) dream over around two hours. Take the small ferry over to the island where you will be met and taken to the hall to get all kitted up.
If getting to Easdale is difficult and have a seashore you’d like to explore then we can come to you! Contact us and we can tailor a foraging foray for you at a place that suits you.
When?
The best time to forage (and when harvesting would occur) is on the largest tides (known as spring tides) which occur around a full and new moon. This generally means about 12 days a month the tides are good for foraging.
What you will need:
Wellies (preferably, though walking boots or wetsuit boots are ok) and waterproofs should be worn. Warm clothes depending on the time of year. Gloves and a hard hat will be provided.
How much:
For the standard foray prices are:
- Single adult £35
- Two adults: £60
- Adult and child (over 5 and under 16): £45
